Words of the Minister
Poner en valor ese trabajo, la expertiz y profesionalismo de quienes se abocan a este ámbito de la escena es por lo mismo un desafío que ha unido las voluntades de diferentes instituciones nacionales. Y es resultado de este esfuerzo común, que hoy nuevamente se concreta en la participación de Chile en la Cuadrienal de Diseño Escénico de Praga 2019. Así es como nuestro país llega a este relevante escenario internacional con el proyecto Monstruos Menores, de la compañía Los Contadores Auditores, seleccionado a través de una convocatoria pública, en un proceso abierto y transparente con evaluadores y un jurado altamente validado y calificado.
Este logro es producto del trabajo de diseñadores y técnicos escénicos organiza- dos en conjunto con una institucionalidad que ha sabido escuchar al sector y coordinarse para asegurar la presencia local. Desde la versión anterior se ha realizado un trabajo organizado entre el Ministerio de las Culturas, las Artes y el Patrimonio, la Dirección de Asuntos Culturales (DIRAC), la Escuela de Diseño Escénico de la Universidad de Chile y la Asociación Nacional de Diseñadores Escénicos. Una sinergia clave porque encuentros como esta Cuadrienal son fundamentales para la profesionalización e internacionalización de los participantes chilenos, ya que otorgan oportunidades laborales y de crecimiento artístico personal, que a la vez redundan en todo el circuito.
Este envío constituye además un reconocimiento al trabajo de los artistas que han participado en esta Cuadrienal desde hace 20 años de forma autogestionada o postulando a fondos concursables, que no siempre han sido asignados.
Y si de reconocer el trabajo de los profesionales se trata, no puedo menos que destacar la generosidad de “Los Contadores Auditores”, autores de la muestra profesional chilena. Con Monstruos Meno- res rinden homenaje y visibilizan a la más amplia gama de los diseñadores escénicos nacionales, dando cuenta de la diversidad de creación que los define y la materialidad con que trabajan, mostrando una potente riqueza que también es repositorio de nuestra identidad.
Felicito además el incansable trabajo y empuje de los estudiantes de Diseño Escénico de la Universidad de Chile, futuros profesionales y responsables de las nuevas prácticas espaciales escénicas, también presentes en esta cita mundial. Como también al Colectivo Complejo Conejo, seleccionado directamente por la organización de la Cuadrienal para intervenir el espacio público en su contexto.
Así es como nuestro país estará presente en tres instancias centrales de la Cuadrienal: Profesionales, Estudiantes y Formación, apoyo que es sello del compromiso desde el Estado con todas las líneas y procesos de creación y un importante acompañamiento en esta vitrina internacional.

A variety of national institutions have come together in an effort to place a greater value on the performance, expertise and professionalism of those who work in this area and the result of this common effort has manifested in the participation of Chile in the 2019 Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space. And so, we arrive to this international scenario with the Minor Monsters project by the Contadores Auditores Company. They were selected by a validated and qualified jury through an open and transparent public call for proposals.
This achievement is the product of the work of organized designers and stage technicians alongside institutions that have heard the sector’s needs and that have worked towards establishing a local presence. Since the last version, there has been a constant collaboration between the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage, the Cultural Affairs Direction (DI- RAC), the Stage Design program at the University of Chile and the National Association of Stage Designers. This synergy is key because gatherings like the Quadrennial are fundamental for the professionalization and internationalization of Chilean participants for it opens them up to new opportunities and promotes personal artistic growth that, later, will flow back into the community.
This envoy also establishes the recognition of the work of artists that have been participating in the Quadrennial for the last 20 years in a grassroots effort, applying successfully and unsuccessfully to government grants for support.
In addition, if we are to talk about recognizing the work of professionals, we cannot leave out the generosity of “Los Contadores Auditores”, authors of this professional Chilean exhibit. In Minor Monsters, they are paying homage and bringing visibility to a wide spectrum of stage designers while informing the diversity of productions that has defined them by exposing the materiality they work with, revealing the profound wealth that is also an archive of our identity.
I must congratulate, as well, the tireless efforts and work by the Stage Design students of the University of Chile, these future professionals that will be responsible for new stage design practices are also present in this worldwide gathering. Additionally, the Complejo Conejo Collective that was selected directly by the Quadrennial to perform a public space intervention for the occasion.
Thus, our country will be represented in three sectors present in the Quadrennial: professional, students, training. A support that is backed by the profound commitment that the state has with all of its areas, with the creative process and an important backing for this international showcase.

Las artes escénicas siempre han representado los cambios que acontecen en la sociedad y, este año, el llamado de la Cuadrienal de Diseño y Espacio Escénico de Praga (PQ2019) lo hace bajo el concepto de la “transformación”, con la participación de 50 diseñadores escénicos chilenos que viajarán a República Checa para exhibir la propuesta “Monstruos Menores”, que representa, en este contexto, el sentir de una realidad híbrida en el universo escénico.
Difundir nuestro arte es siempre una manera de fortalecer los lazos con la comunidad internacional, es una oportunidad de dar a conocer el trabajo y pensamiento de nuestros artistas frente a nuevas audiencias, y al mismo tiempo, ver y aprender de otras naciones en un intercambio multicultural que enriquece el conocimiento y la identidad.
Praga es un epicentro artístico que realiza un llamado a las revelaciones artísticas, pero que, a la vez, es memoria viva de la historia cultural desde hace ya más de 400 años, res- guardando sus inicios para proyectarlos hoy. Ser parte de este encuentro, que incluye un programa de seminarios, exposiciones, conversatorios, talleres y puestas en escena, es una oportunidad para el crecimiento de nuestros artistas y mostrar el espíritu de Chile.

The Performing Arts have always been representative of society’s changes and, this year, the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space has done its part through inviting in the concept of “transformation”. Fifty Chilean stage designers will travel to the Czech Republic to exhibit the “Minor Monsters” project, representing, in this context, the sensations of a hybrid reality within the stage world.
The promotion of our art has always been a way of strengthening international relationships, an opportunity to make the work and thoughts of our artists visible to new audiences and, at the same time, to see and learn from other nations in a multicultural exchange that cultivates knowledge and identity.
Prague is an artistic epicenter calling to artistic revelations but it is also, a living monument to the cultural historic memory of a past spanning over 400 years. It has safeguarded its origins so it may share them today. To take part of this meeting, which includes seminars, exhibits, Q&A’s, workshops and productions, is an opportunity for our artists to develop and for Chile to show its spirit.
